Hypnolovewheel
Hypnolovewheel was founded in 1986 in NYC by guitarists Dave Ramirez and Stephen Hunking and bassist Dan Cuddy, longtime friends and veterans of Long Island garage-rock band Plastic Device. They were soon joined by Peter Walsh, a Connecticut garage-rock prodigy. In 1987, the band released a 4-track 7-inch EP on their own Snatch-O-Matic imprint and contributed a theme to Pat Bishow’s film Soultangler. Their debut album, Turn! Turn! Burn! (produced by Albert Garzon), followed in 1988 on Fabian Aural Products to strong reviews. Candy Mantra was released in 1989, drawing attention from underground tastemakers Conflict and 18 Wheeler, as well as The New York Times, which described their sound as “slightly cockeyed, 1960s-style pop-rock layered with 1980s fuzz, noise, and irony.” Hypnolovewheel then signed with Alias Records, releasing a trilogy: Space Mountain (1991), Angel Food (1992), and Altered States (1993), all with producer/engineer Lou Giordano. With four songwriters and vocalists, the band ranged from noise rock to jangling pop, earning college radio play and MTV’s 120 Minutes. They shared stages with acts from the Fleshtones to the Jesus Lizard to fIREHOSE, toured the U.S. with King Missile, and also toured with Kitchens of Distinction and The Posies. They frequently appeared alongside artists including Galaxie 500, Pavement, and Superchunk, and were featured multiple times in Marvel’s Spider-Man comics. More Info
