James Hype’s career was built in the booth, long before it reached the main stage.
Raised on the Wirral in north-west England, he got his first decks, second-hand vinyl turntables, at 15. By 18, he was handing out mix CDs around Liverpool and talking his way into club sets. He later moved to London with £50 in his pocket. Years spent playing six nights a week turned repetition into a signature: fast, technical mixing across four decks, using live edits, mashups and loops to treat the equipment like instruments rather than playback devices.
His breakthrough came with 2017’s platinum-selling “More Than Friends.” “Ferrari,” made with vocalist Miggy Dela Rosa, took him worldwide: Number one in three European countries, platinum in 10 and now past 2 billion collective streams.
That crossover success never pulled him away from the dancefloor. His music moves through house, tech house and modern dance, built around immediate vocal ideas and tested in real rooms. DJ and producer are two halves of the same process: the booth reveals what the studio cannot.
Today, Hype headlines clubs and festivals worldwide, with residencies at Hï Ibiza and Zouk Las Vegas. His Get Closer shows put the decks in the middle of the crowd, removing the barrier between DJ and dancefloor. Through Stereohype and Real DJing, he champions DJing as a craft built on effort, intention and growth.
