Mihlali "Mimi" Xama is a South African musical and performance artist, born and raised in East London, Eastern Cape. Immersed in sound from an early age, Mimi’s creative foundations were shaped by their home as their mother’s choir singing inspired their musical journey.
This early exposure sparked a lifelong dedication to the performing arts, leading Mimi from primary school plays to winning a high school Dramatic Arts Trophy. To refine their storytelling and performance capabilities, Mimi pursued formal studies at AFDA Johannesburg. A definitive milestone in their artistic evolution came in 2025 with the curation and performance of their 30 minute solo production, Gemini’s Epiphany. This project boosted Mimi’s confidence to pursue music professionally, launching them into Johannesburg's alternative performance spaces.
Blending Afro-Jazz, Experimental Jazz, Xhosa Traditional music, and Neo-Soul, Mimi’s distinctive sound draws inspiration from legendary South African artists, including Thandiswa Mazwai and Simphiwe Dana.
Mimi’s music serves as a vessel to educate, heal, and awaken. Deeply rooted in Xhosa spirituality and the profound karmic cycles of nature, their work invites listeners into spaces of ancestral connection and modern reflection. Beyond the stage, Mimi’s purpose is to encourage paths of self-love and intense self-discovery. Through every rhythm and vocal layer, they urge people to peel back the noise of the world and reveal their true, divine purpose.
