Shruthi Veena Vishwanath is a musician whose practice is rooted in community, feminism and decolonising of voice. Classically trained and later unschooled by mystic music from South Asia and beyond, she creates music that defies easy labelling.
Shruthi’s core focus is bhakti and sufi music- abhang, nirguni, vachana, baul, sufi and more. Within this vast universe, she seeks voices that are on the margins and beyond the obvious. Voices of women, voices of those marginalised by faith, profession, language or caste- these poems she composes and sings. Vithu Mazha, her first album, celebrates the women warikari poets of Maharashtra. She also sings Kabir and other poets, cutting across language and geography- bringing in different instruments and arrangements to the music.
Shruthi writes about music and poetry, translates abhangs, Kabir and vachanas, and has been published in magazines, web publications and poetry anthologies. She has contextualised, curated and performed music for diverse audiences from major festivals to world renowned universities to grassroots communities across the world.
Through her community music initiative Music in the Machan, she reimagines music education, performance and curation that is deeply rooted in healing, shared context and honouring of grassroots communities.
